First-Round Recap
As mentioned, there were plenty of exciting Wimbledon matchups on the first day of competition Monday. Both Sinner and Alcaraz advanced to the second round of the Wimbledon schedule with four- and three-set victories, respectively. Top-10 seeds and Wimbledon favorites Grigor Dimitrov, Casper Ruud, and Daniil Medvedev also all advanced to the second round with three-set victories.
In other noteworthy Wimbledon matchups on Monday, veterans Gael Monfils and Stan Wawrinka both advanced and will play against each other in the second round. Americans Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, and Brandon Nakashima have also advanced to the second round, although none are real contenders in Wimbledon odds to win the tournament.
The most exciting match on day one was arguably between Arthur Cazaux and qualifier Zizou Bergs. The match needed three consecutive tiebreaks, with Cazaux ultimately winning 6-1, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (8). Ugo Humbert, Aleksander Vukic, Lloyd Harris, and Jordan Thompson also advanced with impressive Wimbledon player stats in the first round.
Breaking Down the Draw
The most likely matchup in the first of the four quarter-finals at Wimbledon is Sinner vs. Daniil Medvedev. Sinner, the top seed with the second-shortest Wimbledon odds, doesn’t have much of a threat in his section of the bracket, although he does face 2021 Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini in the second round. Still, he should advance. Medvedev, who reached the semi-finals last year and was runner-up to Sinner at the Australian Open this year, will have to overcome Dimitrov in the fourth round to earn a spot in the quarters. The second quarter-final could see Alcaraz vs either Ruud or Paul.
The most likely outcomes in the other two quarters are Andrey Rublev/Stefanos Tistsipas vs. Alexander Zverev/Taylor Fritz and Hubert Hurkacz/Alex de Minaur vs. Djokovic/Holger Rune. All are decent options with strong Wimbledon player stats, but it’s hard to put faith in Djokovic. He is coming off surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee and has looked relatively pedestrian this season, at least by his standards, with a record of 18-6. He also hasn’t won a title, which is incredibly rare for him.

Finals Prediction
It’s very tough to bet against Alcaraz at Wimbledon considering he is the defending champion and is coming off his third grand slam title at Roland Garros. However, Sinner is a remarkable 39-3 this season, with two of those losses coming against Alcaraz. They could meet in a potential semi-finals showdown, which would easily be one of the most anticipated Wimbledon matchups in recent memory. Zverev is a good bet in Wimbledon AI picks to win the other half of the bracket. He has yet to break through for a grand slam title, but was runner-up at Roland Garros and it appears as though it’s only a matter of time before he wins a major.
With that said, Sinner is the best pick for Wimbledon odds as he has been the most consistent and dominant player on the ATP Tour this season.
Pick: Sinner def. Zverev
