From The Houston Oilers To Tennessee Titans: A Journey

The Tennessee Titans’ journey through two different cities and distinct periods of its history has been filled with everything from exciting wins to painful losses. The Titans came into being in the NFL, first as Houston Oilers, then Tennessee Oilers before finally becoming the Titans we know today. Years of this legendary trek have given birth to fierce rivals that have electrified the gridiron.

The Houston Oilers Era

In the 1960s, the Houston Oilers were an AFL powerhouse that won two out of three championships and made several NFL playoff appearances. They failed to make it past the initial stage post-AFL-NFL merger despite ten appearances at playoffs and not winning any division title a single time during that period. The most notable players during this era were Warren Moon and Earl Campbell who both won NFL MVP awards.

Brief Period As Tennessee Oilers

The move in 1997 to Nashville by the franchise signaled the start of the Tennessee Oilers Era. Although they struggled for two seasons on-field, loyal fan base was built in Nashville. By the end of 1998, Oiler’s name had been retired heralding a new direction for the NFL team.

Rise Of Tennessee Titans

Titans were founded in 1999 and immediately made a Super Bowl appearance against St. Louis Rams although they lost; it marked an era with them having appeared in playoffs thirteen times already. The Titans are famous for their dynamic Derrick Henry as well as Steve McNair and Eddie George who are their legends.

It was not until the Houston Oilers’ relocation to Nashville during which they became Tennessee Oilers that later changed its name again to Tennessee Titans thus acquiring its present identity starting from year 1999.

The franchise was regulated as Houston Oilers based in Houston Texas from 1960-1996 period before moving to Nashville Tennessee where it began as Tennessee Oilers between the year 1997 and ended as Tennessee Titans from then onwards.

Therefore, still they mean much despite their rich history steeped in thrilling rivalries such as those with the Houston Oiler who became what is now known as The Titans. Their story is one of resilience & fighting spirit shared by both teams and fans from former Houston Oilers to current Tennessee Titans. So whether reminiscing about legends of the past or cheering on current stars, Titans fans have plenty to be proud of.
